How to Measure a Window Screen

Measuring a window screen takes about five minutes a window. You need a metal tape measure, a pencil and your phone for photos.

There are two ways to do it, depending on whether you still have the old screen.

If you have the old screen

This is the easy way, and the most accurate.

Width
Height

Measure outside edge to outside edge.

  1. 1Take the screen out and lay it flat.
  2. 2Measure the width. Measure side to side across the outside edges of the frame.
  3. 3Measure the height. Measure top to bottom across the outside edges of the frame.
  4. 4Write it down width first, then height. For example: 30 x 36.
  5. 5Measure to the nearest 1/8 inch. Small differences matter for a snug fit.

Even if the old screen is torn or bent, it can still give you a good size. If the frame is badly bent, measure along the straightest side.

If you don't have the old screen

This is trickier, because every window holds its screen a little differently. Some screens sit in a track. Some clip in. Some use little springs on one side.

  1. 1Find where the screen goes. Look for the track, channel or clips on the outside of the window frame.
  2. 2Measure the opening where the screen sits, side to side and top to bottom.
  3. 3Take photos. Get one of the whole window and a close-up of the edges where the screen would sit.
  4. 4Send us the numbers and photos. We'll look it over before we build anything.

If this sounds like a hassle, skip it. We'll come measure for free.

Tips for getting it right

  • Measure every window. Windows that look the same are often a little different.
  • Measure twice. It's quick, and it saves a remake.
  • Label your windows. Something simple like "kitchen left" or "upstairs bedroom" helps keep sizes straight.
  • Note the frame color and any pull tabs or springs on the old screen.
  • Use a metal tape measure. Cloth tapes can stretch.

Using your measurements for a price

For a repair, add the width and height together. That tells you the size:

  • Small: up to 60 inches
  • Medium: 61 to 90 inches
  • Large: 91 to 120 inches
  • Over 120 inches: we'll quote it

For example, a 30 x 36 screen adds up to 66, so it's medium. Your price is an estimate until we confirm it with you, before any work starts.
